
The Future World section covers the technological side, while the World Showcase - which grew out of a never-built expansion for Disneyland Park in Anaheim first called International Street, then later International Land - covers the cultural aspect. That’s where the name “Epcot” comes from: It once stood for “Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow.” After Walt’s death, the decision was made to move way from the city/community concept and instead build the park as a celebration of human achievement, innovation, and culture.

Indeed, originally, Epcot was intended to be an experimental planned community. Historically, Epcot has been… well, not exactly characterless, but certainly not as heavy on the major Disney franchises as most of Disney World’s other parks. In June 2014, Disney announced that the show would close in January 2015, then two months later they pushed forward the closure to the end of August 2014. The American Idol Experience was promoted by winners of the American Idol from Season seven onwards by appearing in commercials and announcing " I'm going to Disney World!". A press event just prior to the official opening featured many "Idol" celebrities, including all seven winners, numerous finalists, host Ryan Seacrest, judge Paula Abdul and "American Idol" creator Simon Fuller. The attraction's grand opening took place on February 14, 2009, with occasional preview performances in the weeks leading up to the official opening.
